Your Guide to Winter Yard Safety

Winter is upon us, which means cozy nights by the fire, hot chocolate, and the holiday season. It can also mean frost, slippery walkways, and landscaping nightmares!

Here are some things to do to keep your home safe in winter:

Check Your Gutters

Frozen, cluttered gutters can pull the siding right off of your home. Heavy frozen debris and water can also cause sagging gutters and attract mildew and other bacteria to grow.

Make sure to do a thorough clean before it gets too cold. Heat tape is also a great addition to your gutters to prevent ice blocks from forming.

Care For Your Plants

Bring in any potted plants that you can, and cover sensitive garden beds. Adding a new layer of mulch can add insulation to your garden to protect against frozen ground and heavy snows.

Put Away Hoses and Spouts

Water expands when it freezes, which can spell bad news for your outdoor hoses, pipes, and sprouts in the winter. Disconnect, drain, and store your hoses before that first freeze. Otherwise, you may be met with a cracked hose in the spring!

Keep Your Driveway Happy

Driveways, pathways, and other pavers on your property should be kept clear of debris and cleaned off swifty when there is snowfall. No slipping on large patches of ice this year!

Look Forward to Spring

It may seem crazy to give your lawn any type of treatment before a frost, but nitrogen-rich fertilizer can help your lawn come in fuller and more healthy when temperatures warm up.
