For sidewalks and patios, a minimum of 4-6 inches of granular base material is recommended. Residential driveways require 10-12 inches. A 1-inch layer of concrete sand is used as bedding. Stone dust or screenings are not recommended as they retain moisture.
In cases where the soil subgrade is unstable, a woven geotextile should be installed between the subgrade and the granular base. This prevents the materials from mixing over time, enhancing the longevity of the project.
Sealing pavers offers multiple benefits, such as stain resistance, enhanced color, and preventing weed growth. Sealing also facilitates better snow and ice removal. Pavers should be sealed 60 days after installation and re-sealed every 2-4 years.
Weeds result from airborne seeds lodging in the joint sand. Using polymeric joint sand helps prevent weed growth by hardening in the joints. Sealing also helps by stabilizing the joint sand. If weeds do appear, they can be manually removed.
One of the key benefits of pavers is that individual units can be easily replaced if damaged. Specialized cleaning products are also available for stain removal.
Yes, pavers can be plowed, blown, or shoveled like asphalt or concrete. The chamfered edges prevent damage from shovels and plows. De-icing products, such as salt or calcium chloride, do not harm pavers. Heated snow-melting systems can also be installed underneath.
If pavers settle, they can be lifted, the base and bedding material can be re-compacted, and the same pavers can be reinstalled. This allows for seamless repairs without visible patches.
Efflorescence is a natural process where free lime from the concrete surfaces as a white residue. It wears off over time or can be removed with an efflorescence cleaner designed for concrete pavers.
