In a time of uncertainty and confusion, one silver lining is that we are able to spend more time exploring our own backyards. We’ve been given the opportunity to relax and rejuvenate ourselves. Since a trip to the mall or park is out of the question, let’s journey out to the back.

Here are some of our favorite ways to spend time outdoors:

Go “Camping”

Getting sick of your own living room? It’s time to shake things up a little. Grab your sleeping bags and some flashlights and spend the night beneath the stars in your own backyard. Bonus points if you have a fire pit to roast hot dogs and make s’mores! Roughing it has never been so fun.

Plant Seasonal Flowers in Your Garden

From learning about botany to enjoying the fruits (literally) of your labor, building your dream garden is a great way to stay productive during the quarantine. Investing in herbs, flowers, and trees is a great activity that the whole family can enjoy.

Enjoy the Weather

If your family isn’t big on spending time outdoors, why not create a space that is a safe haven? A comfortable seating area is a great spot to read a book while getting some vitamin D. A rest in a hammock or a walk through your backyard pathways can provide a great place to get away from the noise for some much-needed alone time

Cook Outdoors

Did you know that you can install a full kitchen in your yard? If you can’t go out to eat, you can always eat outside. From family BBQs to romantic dinner dates, it’s time to take your cuisine al fresco. Those herbs and veggies you’ve been growing in your garden (see #2)? They just became your star ingredients. Remember, you’re only limited to your imagination!

Get Your Sport On

A beautiful open yard is just begging to be turned into a sporting arena! All you need is a soccer ball, some hockey sticks, or a baseball and bat to get some exercise in the most fun way possible.

You could also invent your own game as a family. Dig through your shed to see what you can create with old pool noodles and some sidewalk chalk. You’re never too old to get creative!
